How to care for your Hair Extensions!

Written by Nikki January 2024

Introduction:

Hair extensions can be a fantastic way to achieve the length, colour and volume you desire, but proper care is essential to maintain their appearance and longevity. In this guide, we’ll explore the best practices for taking care of your hair extensions, ensuring they stay looking fabulous for as long as possible.

1. Choosing the Right Extensions:

Selecting high-quality hair extensions is the first step towards ensuring longevity. Opt for extensions made from real human hair, as they can be styled, washed, and treated like your natural hair. We recommend and supply Beauty Works hair extensions. We have 7 different methods to suit your hair and over 7 master extensionists trained to deliver the best results. We have written a separate blog called 'What extension method is best for your hair' if you would like to find out more about the different methods we offer.

2. Washing Techniques:

When washing your hair extensions, we recommend a Beauty Works sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo on some of the extension methods to prevent damage. Gently detangle the hair before wetting it, and then wash it in a downward motion to avoid tangling. Avoid washing the extensions too frequently, as this can strip them of natural oils, try to just wash the top of your hair every other wash if possible.

3. Conditioning:

Regular conditioning is crucial to keep hair extensions soft and manageable. Apply a quality beauty works conditioner from mid-length to the ends, avoiding the roots to prevent slippage. Deep conditioning treatments can be beneficial every 2-3 weeks to maintain the health of the hair.

4. Brushing:

Use a wide-tooth comb or a specialized brush designed for extensions to detangle your hair gently. Start from the tips and work your way up to the roots. Be patient and avoid harsh tugging to prevent breakage.

5. Heat Styling:

You can style them with heat tools. However, it’s essential to use a heat protectant spray before styling to minimize damage. Keep the heat setting moderate and avoid excessive use of hot tools, we reccomend EIMI Thermal Image or Sebastian Trilliant heat protection spray.

6. Protecting Extensions During Sleep:

To prevent tangling and matting, tie your hair in a loose braid or ponytail before bedtime. Consider using a silk or satin pillowcase, as these materials create less friction and reduce the risk of damage.

7. Avoiding Overuse of Products:

While products like hairspray, mousse, and serums can enhance the appearance of your extensions, using them excessively can lead to product buildup. This buildup can weigh down the hair and make it look dull. Use products sparingly and choose those specifically designed for extensions.

8. Swimming Precautions:

Chlorine and saltwater can be harsh on hair extensions. Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water to reduce the absorption of chlorine or salt. After swimming, wash and condition your hair to remove any chemicals.

9. Regular Maintenance:

Schedule regular maintenance appointments with your stylist to check the condition of your extensions. Trimming the ends and adjusting the placement can help keep your extensions looking fresh and natural.

10. Handling Extensions with Care:

Treat your hair extensions with the same care you would give your natural hair. Avoid excessive pulling, twisting, or vigorous activities that could lead to tangling or breakage. Gentle care will extend the life of your extensions.

11. Heatless styling

After washing and blowdrying, to refrain from using as much heat to support the longevity of your extensions we recommend heatless curlers, sleep in silk sets such as Eternal Muse, but please don't forget to ALWAYS Blow dry your hair when you have extensions.

Conclusion:

Proper care is essential for maintaining the beauty and longevity of your hair extensions. By following these tips, you can enjoy the versatility and glamour of extensions while ensuring they stay in excellent condition. Remember that each set of extensions may have specific care requirements, so always consult with your NJUK stylist for personalised advice as each head of hair is very different and should be cared for in line with the advice given to you by your stylist.
